The partnership and efficiency of Yazoo County’s tax assessor and tax collector offices are vital components of our community. The work produced from these two offices is crucial in setting the tone and foundation of our community’s direction, progress and success.
It is imperative that both offices work well together in a timely and professional manner. Any instability within these offices affects taxpayers, economic endeavors and, quite frankly, our livelihood.

When 45 tax roll corrections recently arrived at the office of Tax Collector Miranda Alexander, she said it was not fair for the tax assessor to “wait until the last minute” to get them to her considering she had a short turnaround deadline.
But Tax Assessor Denise Robertson said it was “a one-time error,” adding several other issues to explain her holdup, leaving the county board scratching their heads.

Temporarily relocating the central fire station after it collapsed last month will come with a price tag of over $200,000.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen openly discussed the costs associated with the temporary structures during Monday’s meeting. Additional action was needed by the city council to include the lease agreement amounts to the previous board minutes and current claims docket.

Two city department heads announced their retirements this week with their last days of work for Yazoo City to be towards the end of the month.
Fire Chief Ricky Harris and Public Works Director Robert Green submitted their resignation letters to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday afternoon.
Green’s last day will be March 24, and Harris’ will be on March 31.

Teachers would receive $2,000 annually for three years, for a total increase of $6,000. Special education teachers would receive $3,000 annually for three years, for a total increase of $9,000.
The Mississippi Senate is countering the House’s $5,000 teacher pay raise with a $2,000 scaled approach over 3 years.
Through a strike-all amendment to HB 1395, the Senate now proposes to provide $2,000 pay raises to teachers each year for three years, for a total pay increase of $6,000.
