Special Olympics Mississippi recently hosted the 2025 Gold Gala at Duling Hall. The event honored the accomplishments of more than 6,000 athletes across the state who compete with Special Olympics Mississippi.
Donna Sims and Rita Martinson, who both have served on the board for more than 25 years, were honored. The evening also included a live auction, dining and music from The Love Notez.

Dr. Elizabeth "Bess" Shirley Stanton, age 69, passed away at home in Candler, NC on November 9, 2025, surrounded by the love of her wife of 25 years (Vicki), her children, and pets. Bess was born in Jackson, MS on July 24th, 1956. She earned an undergraduate degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, her MD from the University of MS, and completed her Residency in General Adult and Child Psychiatry at Duke University. The Tate County Board of Supervisors and the Tate County Economic Development Foundation have announced the hiring of Joe Max Higgins to fill the vacancy in the community’s community’s economic and industrial development organization.
The announcement was made Monday night following a meeting of the EDF Board and community stakeholders.

Mary Tumasz Lackey, aged 78, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on September 22, 1947, Mary was the daughter of Eddie and Bobbie Tumasz. She was raised in Jackson and graduated from Murrah High School. Mary then attended the University of Mississippi. In 1967, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Lackey. Later, their son, Mark, was born in Oxford.
