What a glorious Christmas this was weather wise. For almost an entire week, temperatures shot up into the mid-70s with mild winds and no rain. What a treat.
Several of these days neared the all-time 180-year record highs for those dates. Folks flocked outdoors and the walking trails were full of families getting exercise and enjoying God’s beauty.

The Yazoo County Livestock Show and 4-H Livestock Show at 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the 4-H show barn, located on Gordon Avenue, across from Manchester Academy in Yazoo City. Admission is free.
Approximately 23 exhibitors, aged eight to eighteen, will show approximately 86 animals in the categories of lambs, goats, beef cattle, and swine. Youngsters under eight will get a chance to show 4-H animals at the Yazoo County Livestock show in the Under Eight Showmanship divisions.

Cameron Potter of Bentonia made it on Northwest's Vice President's List for the Fall 2025 semester at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
The honor comes to full-time students who completed the semester with a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74.

The President's List for the Fall 2025 semester at Northwest Mississippi Community College has been released by college officials. Included are full-time students who completed the semester with a grade point average of 3.75 to 4.0.

The Yazoo County YouthBuild (YCYB) is a youth and community development program that provides a meaningful “second chance” for area youth to earn their high school diploma and gain valuable vocational skills and job-readiness training to increase their employability upon graduation. The Yazoo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its December 11, 2025 meeting at JoAnne Collins home for its Christmas luncheon.
Sue Patterson, Regent, presided over the meeting. Members voted on Janet Whittington as a Delegate for the 2026 NSDAR Continental Congress.
The following members were presented certificates for their years of service: Montine Young Bond, 50 years; Janet Looney Whittington, 40 years; and Kathy Sigrest LaMonte, 20 years.

Public Works Director Robert Green said loose leaves continue to cause havoc within Yazoo City, urging citizens to consider the impact of flooding that comes along with it.
“I’ve been seeing a lot of leaves getting blown out onto the curbs and ditches,” Green said. “We just can’t keep up with them. I have seen piles all around Clubview and all down Grand Avenue. None of them are bagged up. If they don’t want to get flooded out, they need to stop doing that.”

Many accidental fires are started by vagrants inside such properties as they attempt to keep warm in the colder temperatures.

County leaders pushed forward with a resolution that will continue the momentum to finish an uncompleted levee in the Rocky Bayou area of Yazoo County.
David Ivy, with the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Commission, recently appeared before the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors for their approval on the levee project, which will also come at no expense to the county.
Ivy said the levee is within the Rocky Bayou area.

, Greenwood Police are outside of Greenwood Leflore Hospital after four people were shot during an incident in the 300 block of East Market Street on Christmas Eve.
Four people were shot in Greenwood on Christmas Eve, two of them fatally.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said she received a call at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in regard to a shooting incident that occurred on the 300 block of East Market Street.
The two people who died from the shooting were a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old man, both from Greenwood. Both died from multiple gunshot wounds, Sanders said. The names of the victims are not yet being released as the coroner has yet to inform the victims' families.

When I was a child, the Christmas season was the most exciting time of the year for me.
It was the smell of fresh trees and sweet cookies. It was the sight of twinkling lights and decorated homes. It was the sound of bells ringing and people laughing.
For me, it really was the most wonderful time of the year. And it was all because of the little things that made the season so special.

Julia Chavez picked up when her phone rings in the middle of the night. This scenario has played out several times, but during this late-night phone call, the person on the other end urgently asked her to translate.
“They’re at the hospital, and you can hear that they’re scared,” said Chavez, the founder and CEO of Columbus-based nonprofit Saving Grace Mission, remembering one of several such calls she has received. “They’re intimidated, and you can hear the frustration from the doctors on the other end.”
