In his State AA Golf Tournament debut, Benton Academy’s Anthony Ward played a competitive round, shooting a 105 to take sixth place.
For Ward, the experience proved to be a humbling and teaching event.
“It was a good experience for me,” Ward said. “It was a good learning experience. The biggest thing I learned was to practice a course before a tournament. I just tried to wing it. It was difficult not knowing where the sand traps and water traps were.”
While the loss would have made some players downtrodden, Ward will use the memory as fuel during the grueling summer, where he will train to reach the next level.
“I think I’m going to work really hard on my game over the summer,” Ward said. “I plan on getting better. I plan on getting a lot better.”
A player for Canton Academy won the state in the singles division with a score of 84.
Players from Central Holmes and Marshall Academy each shot an 87.
A player from Marshall Academy took fourth place with a 95, while a second player from West Memphis took fifth with a 102.
Ward came in at 6th place with his 105 in his first state appearance.
A player from West Memphis rounded out the tournament with a 107.
