Yazoo County’s softball team fell 13-7 to Ethel on Monday night, but they found something much more important than a mere victory in the process.
According to Yazoo County head softball coach Grant Andrews, the Lady Panthers found their pride.
“The team came together tonight,” Andrews said. “Even though the score shows we lost, we won in my book because we battled back from a five run deficit and took the lead. We played with Panther Pride for the first time this year.”
Ethel took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of play.
After a scoreless inning, Yazoo County came back and tied things up 1-1 with a run in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Ethel took a commanding 6-1 lead after scoring five runs.
But Yazoo County refused to give up. They came back and scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead, their first lead of the game.
Ethel came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored two runs to regain an 8-7 lead.
The fifth inning was a defensive struggle with neither team able to produce a run.
The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 13-6 with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the final score.
Shelby Scott was the losing pitcher for Yazoo County against Ethel.
Deja Moore went 3-for-3 with two singles, a triple, a run scored, and an RBI in the defeat.
The pride that Yazoo County found against Ethel carried over in their contest against Forest Hill on Wednesday.
Against Forest Hill, the Lady Panthers came out and dominated in an 18-0 victory.
The win over Forest Hill pushed Yazoo County’s record to 5-5 on the season.
Yazoo County will have a non-conference home match-up on Tuesday night when Cleveland High School comes to town.
The first pitch between the Lady Panthers and Lady Wildcats is set for 6:15 p.m.
