Yazoo City High School’s Indians stayed hot on Friday night when they defeated Port Gibson 22-6 in a weather-shortened game.
Lightning tormented the Indians and the Blue Wave to the point where the game could not be completed.
Since the Indians were winning at the time of the cancellation, they were deemed victorious.
Yazoo City head football coach Rodney Adams was not upset about the result, particularly since it was looking as if it would be a late night for the Indians.
“Actually, the game was cancelled right before halftime,” Adams said. “It was due to lightning from the hurricane. The lightning just got worse and worse. You get put in a 30-minute wait for each lightning. We wouldn’t have gotten out of there until 2 in the morning or 3 in the morning, so it was fine that they called it.”
According to Adams, the game was coming together just how he wanted when it was cancelled, though they had already given up more points than he had hoped.
“We had started moving the ball pretty good,” Adams said. “We were just starting to hit our stride. They scored 6 points when our corner fell down in the end zone. We were looking for a shutout.”
In the first quarter of play, the Indians were able to outscore the Blue Wave 6-0.
The Blue Wave came back and scored on a play where Yazoo City’s cornerback fell down in the end zone, but the Indians countered with 16 points, making it a 22-6.
That score would prove to be the final.
Senior quarterback Kory Price went 9-for-15 through the air for 137 yards. Price played a big part in all of the scoring for the Indians, tossing one touchdown and running the other two in.
Percy Green was on the receiving end of Price’s touchdown pass in the win.
John Jones led the Indians with six total tackles.
Parviz King and Jamarion Taylor each had five tackles in the victory.
The win gave the Indians their fourth straight since their opening loss, bringing their overall record to 4-1.
For Adams, a first-year head coach at Yazoo City High, this isn’t the surprise that some people may believe.
“This is what I was thinking it would be, honestly,” Adams said. “I really wanted to take the first one. We were still figuring out our defense. This isn’t a surprise. It’s good to be 4-1, but we haven’t made it to district play yet. I’m happy to be here, but we’re just getting started.”
Yazoo City will try to keep their newfound momentum rolling when they face off with Amanda Elzy on Friday night.
The Panthers are 3-2 on the season after falling 35-2 to rival Greenwood on Friday night.
Adams knows more about Amanda Elzy than most thanks to his past association with their head coach.
“We don’t overestimate anyone, but we feel pretty comfortable about the upcoming game,” Adams said. “They don’t have a lot of trick plays. I’ve been watching film on them for the game. Their coach was my defensive coordinator. I sort of know exactly what to expect out of them.”
Kickoff at Yazoo City is set for 7 p.m.
