The murder case of a Brandon man whose body was discovered in Yazoo County last week has been turned over state investigators.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the murder investigation of Roger Lee Scruggs Jr., 44.
“We have turned it over to the MBI because everything is pointing towards the murder happening outside of our jurisdiction,” Gann said. “And everyone I need to talk to as far as people of interest are also out of our jurisdiction.”
The body of Scruggs was discovered on Wildwood Road, near Bennett Road. Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers contacted the sheriff’s department after he was called to the scene of what at first appeared to be an ATV accident.
But Gann said he believes the “accident” was staged to cover up a homicide. Scruggs suffered blunt force trauma to the face, and Gann said those injuries were not consistent with an ATV accident.
“We feel confident that the murder didn’t happen in our county,” Gann said. “We also suspect there are multiple people involved with this case.”
As of press time, no arrests had been made.
“We pulled what warrants we had and handed them over to the MBI so they could build a stronger case,” Gann said. “The MBI will issue their own warrants once they get enough evidence.”
