A special election will be held to fill the vacancy on the city council, following the death of long-time alderman Aubry Brent Jr.
Lilli Evans-Bass, attorney for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, said the city council will set a date for a special call meeting to discuss a solid date for a special election. With so much time left in the city post tenure, a special election is necessary to fill the vacancy.
According to the secretary of state election guidelines, the order must be entered at the next regular meeting of the governing authorities after the occurrence of the vacancy or at a special meeting to be held not later than ten (10) days after occurrence of the vacancy.
The order must set the election on a date not less than thirty (30) days nor more than forty-five (45) days after the date on which the order is adopted.
The current city council took office on April 9, 2018. Following Brent’s death this week, the vacant post’s occupancy will be determined by city voters to finish out the remaining three years.
Brent, who died Monday afternoon, served as a city alderman for over two decades.
