The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department has reported a few incidents involving landowners and hunting dogs.
Most recently, deputies responded to Irwin Road where a dog owner reported finding his hunting dog dead from a gunshot wound.
“We have been unable to arrest anyone in connection with this shooting so far,” said Sheriff Jake Sheriff. “We want to stress that it is illegal to kill these hunting dog. In fact, it is a felony.”
It is a felony to kill a dog unless there is proof the dogs are posing a threat to people or livestock. And unless law enforcement witness the act, they are limited to how they can respond.
“It’s hunting season and dogs are running,” Sheriff said. “But a hunting dog can’t read a ‘No Trespassing’ sign. Ninety percent of these dogs have collars with names and phone numbers of the owner. We are asking that you call the owner or call us to get the dog off your property.”
