Emotions ran high in the most recent Yazoo City Municipal School District board meeting with one parent telling school trustees they are “fired.”
The aunt of a student at McCoy Elementary School said her niece is bullied every day, and she doesn’t think school leaders are doing anything about it.
Angela Carter said her niece has been bullied every day since she began school at the local elementary school.
“She is bullied all day, every single day,” Carter said. “We have been to the principal’s office, the superintendent’s office. Nobody seems to do anything about it.”
Carter said the constant bullying is affecting her niece with her studies.
“A child cannot go to school and concentrate and learn and get bullied at the same time cause you never know what is on that child’s mind,” Carter said.
When Carter mentioned names of certain personnel, the school board said they would gladly speak to her during executive session. Personnel matters may be handled in a closed, executive session.
Carter agreed she would remain for executive session. But she said she had issues with the district hiring employees who are not residents of Yazoo City.
“Why are you here with our kids,” she asked. “Why can’t nobody from Yazoo City come in here to teach our kids. We have got to get somebody from out of town. Why? If these people in this town are not qualified, start classes. Get them qualified. Get them to where they can go in there and teach our kids. We need somebody who is going to love our kids. We are not sending our kids to be abused.”
Carter said her niece returns home from school every day in tears because of the constant bullying. School leaders stressed the need to go into executive session about the matter.
“We are not sending our kids to school for this right here,” Carter said. “This child was crying every day she went to school. This is not right.”
At that point in the meeting, an unidentified parent addressed the board about the number of out-of-town employees within the district.
“We have teachers, and we have people down here that have their kids in other schools,” she said. “How are you going to teach my kid when the education they are giving my kid is not good enough for theirs. They down there at Manchester. They at the County. “
“Y’all are fired,” she said, before exiting the room, “I said it.”
