Are you one of the many in Mississippi who are considering raising chickens in your own backyard in order to save on the grocery bill?
If so, you’ll want to come to the Yazoo County office of the Mississippi State University Extension Service on Tuesday, June 14, at 6 p.m., to hear Extension Agent Phillip Vandevere, Jr., present a program on “The Backyard Flock”.
The program will address many of the questions and concerns about raising chickens in a backyard setting, including choice of breed, options for breeding, the building of pens, the feeding and maintenance of the flock, and what to do with the end product. Mr. Vandevere, who has a Masters degree in Genetics/Animal Breeding and Bachelor of Science degrees in both Poultry Science and Animal Science, and who also assists his children with their own backyard flock, will end the program with a questions-and-answer session, giving the participants an opportunity to learn from his knowledge and experience.
The program is free, and preregistration is requested but not required. The Extension is office is located on the third floor of the County Office Building, at 212 East Broadway street, between the Health Department and BankPlus. To register, or for more information, please contact the Extension office at 662-746-2453 or e-mail Phillip at (
