Nightclubs, event centers and other establishments that serve alcohol within the city may remain open until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Although city code states that those establishments must normally close by midnight, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved an amendment that would extend operational hours just for the holiday.
Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. asked the board to consider the extension a few weeks ago.
“This would allow the establishments that sell alcoholic beverages to stay open to 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day,” said Sarah O’Reilly-Evans, board attorney. “We did find that the state of Mississippi and the Alcoholic Beverage Control has extended the rules statewide that you should be able to stay open until 1 a.m. New Year’s Day.”
The ordinance amendment would go into effect immediately since New Year’s Day is close to 17 days away.
There was no opposition from the board on the ordinance amendment.
