Six additional properties within the city have been declared a public nuisance, giving owners 30 days to clean up their lots before begin tearing down houses.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen took the necessary steps last Friday to continue the lengthy process of addressing dilapidated properties within the community.
Of the list addressed during the most recent city council meeting, two property owners were present to request an extension to clean up their properties. City leaders granted a 60-day extension to the owners of 847 West Madison St. and 1075 Davis Ave.
With those two exceptions, six other parcels were given the routine 30-day window to address what is being considered “a menace to public health.”
Those six lots include:
• 325 Ridge Rd.
• 612 Shortline Dr.
• 857 West Madison St.
• 803 West Second St.
• 749 West Second St.
• 1033 Ethel St.
Danny Miller, public works director, said updated equipment will allow his department to tackle the growing list of unkempt properties within the city.
“We are moving forward to get more of the houses already on the list down,” he said. “Our goal is to tear down at least two houses a month.”
In other street department news, Miller said his crews will also begin repair potholes thanks to receiving more asphalt. He said he would like to tackle street conditions at least twice a week.
