After stealing the city-issued cell phone of Mayor Diane Delaware, the culprit sent her ransom text messages shortly before being found by police officers.
Delaware said the incident occurred when she was having a washing machine moved into her home.
“I placed both my city phone and personal phone on the side of my truck,” she said. “When I returned outside, my city phone was gone. But my personal phone was still there.”
Concerned about the sensitive material related to city business on the phone, Delaware contacted the Yazoo City Police Department.
But it wasn’t long before the thief sent her a text message.
“The person sent me a message that simply said, ‘send me money,’” Delaware said.
Using the Find my iPhone app, officers were able to find a general area of where the phone was located.
Delaware was soon followed by officers as she attempted to track the stolen phone on her iPad. Stopping outside a home, she said officers went inside and retrieved the phone.
“The officers were extremely efficient, and I thank them for their service,” she added.
The case is still under investigation, and no charges had been pressed of as of press time.
