The city of Yazoo City has a hired a public works director to oversee its street and solid waste operations.
On a 3-2 vote, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen hired Walter Williams, the former water and sewer supervisor of the town of Belzoni.
Mayor Diane Delaware and Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. cast the opposing votes in the recent hire.
Ward 3 Alderman Rev. Gregory Robertson, Ward 2 Alderman Dr. Jack Varner and Ward 1 Alderman Ron Johnson voted to hire Williams.
Williams, who began work this week, has over 25 years worth of experience.
Robertson said he was impressed with the years of experience Williams had in the field.
“He has over 25 years of experience, especially with the water department over in Belzoni,” Robertson said. “Even though Belzoni has a smaller population than we do, he is familiar with how things should be.”
Robertson said Williams is also familiar with street maintenance operations based on his time in the related fields.
“The other applicants we had did not match his level of experience,” Robertson added.
Williams also serves as the pastor of Antioch Church.
