The Yazoo City Clerk's office will be open for extended hours this spring beginning this Saturday, January 6.
During the December meeting, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a motion to keep the office open during the election process to allow citizens ample time to become registered for primaries and to complete absentee ballots if necessary.
City Clerk Kaneilia Williams says that their office will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on January 6, which is the deadline for voter registration for the primary election.
The office will remain open from 8 a.m. to noon on January 27, and February 3, for citizens to cast absentee votes for the first primary election, which will take place on Tuesday, February 6.
Absentee voting for the second primary election will take place at the City Clerk's Office on February 17, and February 24 from 8 a.m. until noon.
The second primary runoff election (if needed) will be on Tuesday, February 6.
Individuals who did not meet the deadline to register for the primaries will still be able to register to vote in the general election on April 2.
The deadline to vote in the General election is Saturday, March 3.
Absentee voting for the General Election will take place on March 24 and March 31 from 8 a.m. until noon.
Residents of Yazoo City may register to vote inside the City Clerk's office in City Hall on Jefferson Street, or inside the Circuit Clerks office inside the Yazoo County Courthouse.
Potential voters must be at least 18 years of age, and must provide a photo ID to register and proof of residency inside the city limits to be qualified to vote in a city election.
Both offices can inform voters of the location of their specified voting precinct, what to do on the day of the election, and how to complete an absentee ballot if the voter will not be able to visit a precinct on election day.
To qualify for an absentee ballot, a person must be outside of the county on the day of the election, or unable to attend the election due to extenuating circumstances. This includes college students, members of the military, individuals who work long distances away, or individuals who are being hospitalized or are voluntary shut-ins. absentee ballots can be mailed to individuals upon request.
Williams encourages the people of Yazoo City to exercise their right to vote.
"This is your opportunity for your voice to be heard." said Williams.
