One Yazoo City man found out the hard way that it may not be a good idea to strike up a conversation with a police officer when you have drugs on you and you have warrant for your arrest.
Thomas McDuff, 35, was charged with possession of a controlled substance following a routine traffic stop in Bentonia on Wednesday.
Bentonia Police Chief Jason Bright said McDuff was the passenger in a vehicle that an officer pulled over for a traffic violation.
“The officer was talking to the driver when McDuff started asking questions,” Bright said. “He was asking the officer how many officers the department had and stated that he was unaware Bentonia even had a police department. The questions flew up a flag to the officer who then ran a check on McDuff.”
McDuff had a warrant for his arrest for skipping bail with the Vicksburg Police Department.
“As the officer arrested him for the warrant, pills were found in between his legs on the seat that came out when the officer was getting him out of the vehicle,” Bright said.
As of press time, McDuff remained in the county jail.
