Bulldozers began moving dirt this week for the construction road of the highly-anticipated Wal Mart store on the Willie Morris Parkway.
Wal Mart closed on its property on Jan. 14, and city engineer Wayne Morrison announced the first step in construction during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Monday.
“Their surveyor was out there working last week,” Morrison said. “They moved equipment onsite this afternoon (Monday) to start putting in the construction road.”
Mayor Diane Delaware said she has been pleased with the meetings with Wal Mart officials. She said the city continues to look and explore for other businesses to locate in the surrounding area.
Construction on the parkway itself will not resume until next month.
“We are still waiting until after March 14 for the seasonal limitations to lift back up,” Morrison explained. “It is drying out out there pretty well, but it is still too cold.”
Morrison said there has been 30 inches of rain this season.
