The Yazoo City Indians fell behind 22-0 at Greenwood Friday, mounted a furious comeback but ended up on the wrong end of a 22-14 loss.
“I feel like we are right there. A play here or there, and it’s a different ball game (against Greenwood),” said Indian Head Coach Justin Washington. “We have to be more locked in on these money downs. We’re on the right track to get this thing turned around.”
The Indians were playing without the services of starting quarterback Tyler Taylor, who was nursing an injury from last week’s game with Humphreys County.
Amarion Brown and Desmond Johnson split time at QB under center for the Indians.
Brown completed 8-of-20 passess for 76 yards while Johnson connected on 2-of-2 passes for 31 yards.
Leading receiver was Tobias McGee with 64 yards on six receptions. Brown had two receptions for 31 yards.
Brown led the ground attack with 12 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown, followed by Johnson with 54 yards on 14 carries and Marquez Green with three carries for 20 yards.
Defensively the Indians were led by Maurice Booker with five tackles.
Brown, Deon Johnson, and Johnny Barber each had three tackles, followed by Jay Nelson and Desmond Johnson with 2.5 takles apiece and Vontavious Bass and Jaleen Barber with two apiece.
Brown and Ronald Townsend each had a forced fumble and Bass and Jabarius Oliver both had fumble recoveries.
Yazoo City (0-2) traveled to rival Yazoo County (1-1) last Friday for the Battle for the Y-Team trophy.
