With a 4-3 victory over the Brookhaven Lady Panthers last week, the Yazoo County Lady Panthers concluded a five game stretch that saw them win three games and sets them up for hopefully a lengthy post-season run.
The Lady Panthers posted wins over Vicksburg (15-0) and Thomas Edwards (16-1), while dropping decisions to Cleveland Central (14-4) and Loyd Star (11-0).
Yazoo County is set to host Aberdeen this Friday in a double-header in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
"I am proud of our young team on how they played and practiced hard to win the region title for the sixth straight season," said YCHS head coach Grant Andrews. "When I took over the softball program, it was not very successful and everybody wanted to schedule us. Now we have won eight region titles out of the last 11 years. One of my goals was to build a winning program and change the culture of softball at Yazoo County and we have done that with hard work and dedication. We expect to win our region every year and have a winning record."
Against Brookhaven, the Lady Panthers were led at the plate by Anna Kiley Leal and Lilly Andrews. The dynamic duo each had a double to score a run in the victory. Andrews picked up the win on the mound, stepping into the circle while surrending four hits and three runs over four and one-third innings. She totalled five strikeouts and walked two.
Yazoo County posted 13 hits in the win over Thomas Edwards with Andrews leading the way with three hits in three at bats. Gardner and Jaylin Foster each collected multiple hits in the win, including a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the third inning.
Leal started on the mound and allowed two hits and one run over three innings while striking out seven and walking one.
