The Yazoo County School District is pursuing a grant that could totally transform our local community, and I encourage the public to be a part of the collaborated efforts to support the initiative.
Our local county school district has several programs and initiatives that have proven to be successful over the years. And building upon that success is crucial for the vitality of our community. A successful school district equals a successful community.
And the district’s most recent initiative to pursue a multi-million dollar grant would only add to the foundation for that successful future.
The local county school district is pursuing a $20 million Community Change Grant through the Environmental Protection Agency. The possibility of being rewarded with the grant could be monumental for our local community. County school officials have been making presentations to local leaders and civic organizations to highlight many of the projects that could become reality with the grant program.
The grant funds could be used in the construction of a state-of-the-art storm shelter for the community. Aside from providing a safety shelter for the community, the facility could also be used for hosting educational events.
There are ideas for facility upgrades for each of the campuses within the Yazoo County School District, including kitchen, HVAC, electrical, structural, plumbing and more. The sport fields could also see upgrades with LED lighting. The installation of green, open spaces within the county school is an option, complete with courtyards, tree canopies, picnic tables and plants.
How can you support these efforts? It may be as simple as a phone call, email or letter.
• Phone calls: Call a key community business leader, elected state or federal official, or stakeholder to introduce and discuss key highlights.
• Emails: Reach out to key community leaders, elected officials and stakeholders to request letters of support for the EPA Community Change Grant.
• Letters of Support: Send an email to a list of community partners, organizations and stakeholders outlining the EPA Community Change Grant initiative and requesting support.
I have contact information and other supplemental information that could be useful if you desire to assist with these efforts. Anyone desiring any of that information, feel free to reach out to me at jamie@yazooherald.net.
