The Yazoo City Indians finished the regular season on a high note, posting a pair of victories over the weekend. The Indians defeated Greenwood 12-11 last Friday and secured a 10-4 victory over Callaway on Senior Day Saturday.
"I was really proud of our guys for going on the road Friday and securing a third-place finish in the district and then coming back, refocusing, and sending our seniors off with a win," said YHS head coach Justin Washington.
The Indians jumped out to a 4-2 first inning lead on the Bulldogs on Friday and held a 5-4 lead after two. Their bats heated up again in the top of the fourth inning as they tacked on five more runs. Greenwood added two runs in the bottom half of the inning and the Indians led 10-6. The Indians added two more runs in the next inning and were able to hold on as Greenwood added three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh inning in a comeback attempt.
Jermarione Tate led the Indians at the plate going 3-for-6 on the day with two RBIs. Dominique Jones went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Maleak Brown went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Jermy Taylor, Jalen Barber, Johnny Barber, and Jarvin Davis, Jr. each had a hit in the victory.
The Indians totalled 13 hits while allowing Callaway just six in the 10-4 Senior Day victory. Taylor went 4-for-4 on the day at the plate and had two RBIs. Jalen Sheriff and Brown each had two hits, and Tate, Jalen Barber, Mekhi Lee, McKinley Edwards, and Jaden Simmons each had one.
Taylor and Edwards, both contributing rare occurrences on the mound, combined to get the win for the Indians.
Said Washington, "Taylor and Edwards are not in our normal pitching rotation, but they stepped up big for us when we needed them to. We had 13 hits as a team. That's the most we've had all season and I hope we can carry that momentum into the playoffs."
The Indians travel to Senatobia Friday to open the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
