Over 50 homes were damaged by a tornado that touched down in the Scotland community and advanced to the Linwood and Vaughan communities.
Yazoo County Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham said a total 58 homes were damaged, and several of those homes were heavily damaged.
Yazoo Valley Electric work crews have been replacing numerous light poles to restore power. Willingham said that as of Tuesday morning around 250 homes on Yazoo Valley Electric’s lines were still without power. He did not have a total for Entergy customers who were still without power.
Yazoo County Road Manager Jim Warrington said county crews have worked tirelessly to clear the roads. Warrington said that one of the biggest obstacles is that some of the trees that were toppled are so large that the county doesn’t have the equipment to move them.
“One of our men burned up a chainsaw Sunday cutting trees,” Warrington said.
On Sunday Yazoo County residents didn’t waste any time picking up the pieces. Volunteers were all around helping clear trees and assist residents with damaged properties. Others were bringing meals to those who were working.
Yazoo County Sheriff Jake Sheriff said that his deputies have been keeping an eye on damaged homes to ensure that no looting takes place.
