The city clerk, police chief and board attorney were reappointed to their posts last week by members of the city council. The reappointment of the board attorney was the only post accepted unanimously by the city board. But the police chief and city clerk posts were met with division among board members with the city clerk position even being revisited following executive session.
The post of Board Attorney Lilli Evans-Bass was reappointed during Friday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting with a unanimous vote by all five members of the city council.
Police Chief Terry Gann was reappointed with Mayor David Starling, Alderman Charlie Jenkins and Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas in support. However, Alderman Jammie McCoy voted in opposition of Gann’s reappointment. And Alderman Macklyn Austin abstained from voting.
Concerning City Clerk Kaneilia Williams’ post, the action taken by the board shifted following executive session.
The majority of the board initially voted against reappointing Williams. Jenkins, McCoy and Thomas voted in opposition of reappointing Williams to her post as city clerk while Starling and Austin supported the reappointment.
However, another vote was taken after executive session. In the second vote, McCoy changed his opposing vote to supporting Williams’ reappointment. With the new 3-2 vote, Williams will return to her post as city clerk.
