One city alderman said that public safety within Yazoo City is his top priority, adding that he was the sole opposing vote against the recent appointment of Patrick Jaco as the city’s new police chief.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen appointed Patrick Jaco, who has served as the interim police chief since last October, during a special call meeting on Dec. 30. However, Alderman Jammie McCoy was the sole opposing vote to this appointment.

This national event honors outstanding high school football players and cheerleaders from across the country and recognizes their athletic achievement and character. An inmate at the local federal prison was pronounced dead within his jail cell after being discovered unresponsive last weekend.
Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Adrian Kordell McCleary, 28, was pronounced dead by Pafford paramedics, following multiple life-saving efforts.
Shivers said McCleary was found unresponsive by correctional officers about 12:10 a.m. st the Federal Correctional Institute Yazoo City Medium.
“Another inmate was also in the cell with him, but he was asleep and was awoken by officials upon the discovery,” Shivers said.

Hundreds of children visited Santa’s Workshop at Jackson Academy in December. The Annual Christmas Open House for kindergarten and younger students is sponsored by the Jackson Academy Association. A highlight of the evening came when children visited Mrs. Claus in her kitchen, where they helped bag canned goods to give to families in need during the holidays—helping the youngest Raiders understand serving others. Last week felt like I should have been working in the garden, flying a kite, or wade fishing for crappie. Other than the two weeks of “seasonal” cold weather we experienced, it has been one of the mildest winters on record. Doves are already cooing, frogs are croaking, and turtles are sunning themselves on logs in ponds and creeks. I have noticed daffodils and jonquils emerging from their short winter nap, ready to show off to the world blazing white and yellow petals. In fact, trees are on the verge of bud break with some species already leafing out.

Railroad District rendering
Ridgeland leaders have dreamed for decades about transforming West Jackson Street, which extends between U.S. Highway 51 and I-55, into a central, walkable downtown named the Railroad District.
This year, work that city leaders consider transformative will get underway.
The city has been awarded a $15.653 million Safe Streets and Roads for All Implementation Grant to advance a safety project along West Jackson Street, one of Ridgeland’s busiest and most historic corridors.
