Dear Editor,
Our nation’s 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 will be celebrated this year on July 4th. A once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us. The founders of our country had a vision to create a new country dedicated to “life, liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.” Nearly 250 years ago our ancestors had to fight for the freedom we have today.
The National Society of the Daughters’ of American Revolution (NSDAR) is proudly leading this nationwide commemoration of the birth of the United States as a member of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission. The Yazoo Chapter of the NSDAR is endeavoring to do our part in ensuring the stories of America’s founding is told. We are putting up displays at Ricks Library. In January our display was on the Grand Union Flag raised by General George Washington on 1 January 1776. In February we put up a display on African American Patriots. This month we will be displaying Female Patriots. We will have a different display for each month this year to educate the public on the American Revolution. Please stop by the library to check them out.
Also, since one of the most recognized symbols of the American Revolution and the many Wars since then and now is the American Flag. It has different meanings for different folks. However, most Americans agree that “Old Glory” symbolizes the value of freedom, strength, hope and opportunity for all. We want to “Illuminate the Star and Stripes Legacy”, So our goal is to fly as many flags as possible in Yazoo City and Yazoo County. Initially we will give away 100 flags with the help of our Sponsors – Yazoo Historical Society, Yazoo County CVB and the Yazoo County Economic Development District. Our goal is to eventually give away 250 flags that will be in honor or memory of individuals or groups, such as a veteran, that will be flown on July 4, 2026. We are looking for donations of flags or money to help us achieve this goal of 250 flags. We want to encourage everyone to participate in this activity so that we can get as many flags as possible flying in Yazoo County!!! We will have a flyer available in April to allow individuals to sign up for flags.
If you are interested in holding your own celebration or activity in honor of America 250, check out the website for Mississippi America 250 Foundation (america250.ms). They are still offering various grants to towns and organizations to aid in their celebration.
Happy Birthday, America!
Sincerely,
Sue Patterson
