An extensive road overlay project and highway sliding repairs within Yazoo County are slated to be completed soon. But one of the largest Mississippi Department of Transportation projects in Yazoo includes the replacement of three bridges, which is anticipated to take until the end of 2025 with about a $28 million dollar price tag.
Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons provided updates to three projects within the local community, which include the replacement of three bridges, Highway 433 overlay and slide repair along Highway 49.
“We are in the midst of summer maintenance season, and projects are making headway throughout the district, many of which are complete or nearly complete,” Simmons said. “These projects show your tax dollars hard at work and show our commitment to improving safety and efficiency.”
Three bridges on Highway 149 over the Yazoo County River floodway channels are being replaced with the project being handled by Key, LLC of Madison. The extensive project has completely closed off traffic on Highway 149 between West Levee Road and Whittington East Levee Road in rural Yazoo County. The $27.9 million dollar project is slated to be completed by the end of 2025.
As of press time, crews were pouring approach slabs to Bridge A, were working to remove Bridge B and were pouring caps for Bridge C. With the traffic closure, northbound travelers must take Highway 3 to Highway 49 North with southbound travelers taking Highway 49 South to Highway 3 South.
“Area residents, drivers and businesses can rest assured and know they will have a safer set of bridges to carry loads across Highway 149,” Simmons said. “Crews will continue working as quickly and efficiently as possible to complete this crucial work.”
About 15 miles of Highway 433 from Benton to the end of the state maintenance at Ebenezer Coxburg Road is also currently being overlayed. Crews have completed random clearing along the roadway and repaired all failed areas in the pavement. Paving efforts are now underway on the mainline.
The Highway 433 project, which was awarded to APAC-Mississippi Inc. with a $5 million dollar estimate, is slated to be completed in the approaching fall season.
Three sliding sites along Highway 49 are also in the process of being completed. The sites are located between Debbie Drive and about 1,000 feet north of Majestic Oaks Drive in Yazoo City. Citizens have probably noticed the extensive crew work along the highway near a local animal clinic. Crews have completed work at these sites and are awaiting growth and coverage.
The $1.6 million project was awarded to Cook and Son, LLC of Smithville. Work will wrap up this summer.
