It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Robert Shurley IV on December 19, 2025. Robert, affectionately known as Bert, was born on September 8, 1981, in Tacoma, Washington, to William Robert Shurley III and Pamela Ables Shurley. He was raised primarily in Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended Lausanne Collegiate School and Christian Brothers High School, and later graduated from Houston High School.
In 2004, Robert proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, a decision that shaped him for the rest of his life. He was deployed overseas multiple times, including service on a Marine Expeditionary Unit that allowed him to travel throughout Europe and Africa. He also served with the “1-8” during the Iraq War, where he was stationed near Fallujah. Robert deeply loved his fellow Marines, and even after leaving active service, the Corps remained a defining and cherished part of who he was. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Another of Robert’s greatest loves was his dogs, who became an even more meaningful part of his life after his military service. He was rarely without a loyal canine companion—often two or three at a time—and they brought him immeasurable comfort and joy. We take comfort in knowing he is reunited with Kenzie, Kenley, Rebs, Penny and others who went before him. Buck, his sweet Labrador, misses his dad dearly.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Pamela Ables Shurley; his grandparents, William Robert Shurley Jr. and Alice Shurley; and Mabry and Geneva Ables. He is survived by his father, William Robert Shurley III (Kelly); his sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Tony Hatchett; his beloved nieces, Holland Miche and Keeghan Gray Hatchett; his step-sister, Charlie Klenk; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Robert loved his family fiercely, served his country honorably, and lived with loyalty and heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive visitors at Stricklin-King Funeral Home from 9:30- 10:30 am with a graveside service following at Glenwood Cemetery on December 27, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Irreverent Warriors (https://www.irreverentwarriors.org/), Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/mission), Community Animal Rescue and Adoption (https://carams.org/) or a veteran or animal charity of your choice.
