Although incumbent Bennie Thompson secured victory statewide for his 15th term in Congress, he did not carry the majority vote within Yazoo County last week.
Challenger Republican Brian Flowers earned a total of 2,787 votes in Yazoo County, 403 more votes than Thompson, who accounted for 2,384 votes.
However, statewide, Thompson proved victorious keeping his seat in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District.
Within the Yazoo County School Board, incumbent Millicent Ledbetter will resume her District 2 seat on the local board. Ledbetter earned 561 votes with challenger Carolyn Jean Gainwell-Ellis receiving 416 votes.
The county school board will also see a new member for the District 1 seat with Etta Saxton, who ran unopposed after former member Chastity Magyar announced her upcoming vacancy.
Within Yazoo County’s judicial posts, all candidates ran unopposed for their seats. Chancery Court judges include James Walker and Robert Clark. Circuit Court judge includes Jannie Lewis-Blackmon. And County Court judge includes Mary Betsy Cotton.
Concerning voter turnout last week, only 27.43 percent of registered voters within Yazoo County showed up at the polls. Yazoo County has 18,940 registered voters, and 5,196 ballots were cast.
