A Yazoo City man remains in critical condition following a shooting that investigators believe stemmed from an earlier argument.
Chief Terry Gann, with the Yazoo City Police Department, said the shooting occurred around 10:22 p.m. last Friday at a home on Charles Street, near West First Street.
The victim remains in critical condition at a Jackson hospital. No other injuries were reported at the scene. And the investigation into the shooting remains open with no arrests or charges as of press time.
“We believe the shooting stemmed from an argument that occurred at the home earlier in the day,” Gann said. “We don’t believe this was a random, drive-by, shooting. When officers arrived on the scene, the victim was in the front yard with a single gunshot wound to his right side.”
To report any information on the shooting, call the police department at 662-746-1131 or Crimestoppers at 662-746-TIPS.
In other police news, Gann reminds the public to remain aware of their surroundings this holiday season.
“It is that time of year again when we begin to see an increase in home and automobile burglaries,” Gann said. “Never leave items inside your car and be sure to keep your vehicles and homes locked. Also, keep a watchful eye over your neighbors.”
Recent figures from the police department show a 17 percent increase in arrests, including 63 misdemeanors, 22 felonies, 21 citations and 14 served bench warrants.
“We have received a lot of feedback from the community that our officers are being seen out and about,” Gann said. “We have also increased our manpower and remain about five officers from being fully staffed.”
