The Yazoo County Tax Assessor Denise Robertson and staff would like to remind homeowners the Deadline for filing Homestead Exemption is April 1, 2026.
If you purchased a new home in 2025 and you were living there December 31, 2025, you will need to file homestead exemption for 2026. Your deed had to be acknowledged by January 1, 2026 and filed by January 7, 2026 to be eligible for 2026. The requirements for filing homestead exemption are:
• Your social security number (if married) your spouse’s social security number and birthdates
• Purchase price (without any finance charge)
• Down Payment (if any)
• Current tag numbers of all vehicles (if you own any vehicles)
• If over 65 years of age (need proof)
• If 100% disabled (need proof)
• If 100% service-connected disabled veteran (need VA car tag letter)
If you currently file homestead exemption and a change occurred during 2025, you will need to re-file for 2026. The changes are:
• Change in the ownership or occupancy of the home or added new spouse.
• Purchase of additional property that may be eligible
• Divorced or deceased spouse.
• Either owner had a 65th birthday in 2025.
• Either owner became 100% disabled in 2025, you will need to bring proof of disability which states that you are totally or 100% unemployable disabled and the date of onset. If the social security letter doesn’t state that, then you will need to bring 1 doctor’s letter stating that along with the social security letter.
• If you’re 100% service connected disabled veteran, you will need to bring the VA Administration car tag letter.
