Yazoo City investigators discovered a connection between two recent drug arrests and a shooting that left a child with a gunshot wound in her leg.
Police Chief Terry Gann said Tony Brown and Maurice Daily face more charges following his department’s investigation of the two suspects while they were in custody for drug charges.
Brown and Daily now face aggravated assault upon a minor and shooting into an occupied vehicle. More charges could be forthcoming.
The shooting occurred last month at Magnolia Apartments, where a child was discovered in the back seat of her mother’s car with a gunshot wound to her leg. The young victim had been caught in the crossfire of a shootout at the local apartment complex.
At the time, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. But both Brown and Daily were taken into custody a few days later in the same area of Magnolia.
“It was reported that a weapon had been pointed at a female during the altercation,” Gann said, in previous interview. “Once on the scene, officers were advised that a male suspect had entered a home in the area.”
Gann said the home resident allowed officers to enter her home, where officers discovered seven firearms, a large quantity of narcotics and $32,900 cash that was separated into multiple baggies.
Brown and Daily were arrested and charged with simple assault, possession of stolen weapons and possession of narcotics. At the time of their arrest, Gann said he felt it could be related to the previous shootings in the area.
“We already had Brown and Daily in our custody, and our investigation led to the discovery of their involvement in the earlier shooting,” Gann said. “Their charges will be enhanced because it involved a child, and more charges could be coming, considering the number of people who were inside the car during the shooting.”
