A nine-hour standoff at a Yazoo County apartment complex finally reached its conclusion Monday morning with the escape of two female hostages and the later arrest of a male suspect. Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said he was appreciative of the combined efforts of his office and state agencies, which resulted in no injuries during the standoff.
Zedrick Grady Jr. was charged with two counts of kidnapping and trespassing after he was taken into custody about 11:15 a.m. Monday at Oakhaven Apartments.
McCoy said the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department received a report at 2 a.m. early Monday morning of “unknown trouble” at the local apartment complex.
“Dispatchers quickly went to work to figure out what was going on,” McCoy said. “They could hear a male on the phone with others in the background in distress. Deputies were then dispatched to Oakhaven Apartments to try and make contact to see what was going on.”
After arriving on the scene, McCoy said deputies made contact with Grady, attempting to talk him out of the apartment home with no success.
“It was then determined to be an active hostage situation, knowing two females were still inside the apartment,” McCoy said.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and Mississippi Highway Patrol Swat Team joined the local efforts. Fortunately, the female hostages were able to escape unharmed.
“The two hostages were able to escape with no injuries after deputies cut a hole in the wall of the adjoining apartment,” McCoy said.
Assumed armed by the authorities, Grady remained in the home for quite some time. By midday, he was taken into custody.
In other news, a fire was reported at the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility about 5:40 p.m. on Dec. 30. Correctional officers reported items were set on fire by inmates within two zones of the local facility.
Response from Yazoo County, Yazoo City and Humphreys County law enforcement soon arrived, securing and evacuating all the inmates.
McCoy said there were no injuries reported, and the Yazoo City Fire Department cleared the zones following the fire report.
