Yazoo County dropped a pair of games to Germantown on Tuesday night.
Lady Panthers 31,
Lady Mavericks 48
The Lady Panthers of Yazoo County continued their struggles in the 48-31 loss to the Lady Mavericks.
The root of their problems, according to Yazoo County head basketball coach Patrick Nutter, was their inability to score, a common theme from this season.
“Scoring was once again our biggest problem,” Nutter said. “We’re getting good shots. In fact, we couldn’t be getting better shots than we are right now. They just aren’t falling. It’s the craziest thing. We’re not a high scoring team anyways, but our defense has gone south lately as well. We’ll probably end up as the fifth seed.”
The Lady Panther and Lady Mavericks were in a tough battle in the first quarter of play, but Germantown was able to edge them out 7-6.
Germantown took a commanding lead in the second quarter of play when they outscored Yazoo County 19-11 to make it a 26-17 game at the half.
In what seemed to be an instance of déjà vu in the third quarter, Germantown once again outscored Yazoo County 19-11 to take a 45-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
The scoring reached a low for both Yazoo County Germantown in the fourth when each could only muster three points, bringing the final to 48-31.
Deja Moore was the leading scorer for Yazoo County with 18 points.
Jalena Allen had seven points in the loss.
When losses begin to pile up, frustration seeps in, and Nutter feels that has been an issue as well.
“Some of it is the frustration factor,” Nutter said. “When you aren’t winning, you get frustrated. We have to learn how to relax and just play.”
While scoring and frustration has certainly been problems for Yazoo County, the biggest problem has been a combination of all of the factors.
“We have not been able to close out close games,” Nutter said. “That’s been our number one problem. We get tight in those big moments.”
Panthers 45,
Mavericks 66
The Panthers’ skid continued on Tuesday when they fell 66-45 to the Germantown Mavericks.
The Panthers got off to a decent start, but Germantown’s start was better. The Mavericks outscored the Panthers 20-14 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Mavericks were able to top their first quarter efforts with a 22-12 scoring effort to take a 42-26 lead at the half.
The third quarter was about as evenly matched as it gets with each team scoring 11 points to make it 53-37 heading into the final eight minutes.
The Mavericks finished things off in the fourth quarter where they outscored Yazoo County 13-8 to give them a 66-45 victory.
Yazoo County faced Cleveland East Side in the regular season finale on Friday, but it was not upon completion by press time.
