After having Spring Break off from competition, the Indians of Yazoo City returned to action on Monday with a 16-8 victory over Riverside High School.
According to Yazoo City High head baseball coach Ben Tillman, five errors on the part of Yazoo City allowed Riverside to stay in the game, particularly early in the contest.
“We had way too many errors and let them stay in the game,” Tillman said.
Riverside jumped on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning.
The Indians responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to tie things up 1-1.
In the top of the second inning, errors became a huge factor and helped Riverside score a whopping six runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
But the Indians were resilient.
Ben Tillman’s bunch racked up six runs in the bottom of the inning to tie things back up at 7-7.
Senior Jeremiah Durr took the mound for Yazoo in the top of the third and effectively shut down Riverside.
After a scoreless third inning, the Indians came out and bashed the ball in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Yazoo City put up seven runs to take a big 14-7 lead.
Riverside came back in the top of the fifth with a couple of hits that resulted in a run, cutting the deficit to 14-8.
The Indians put a stamp of finality on the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning with two more runs to bring the final score up to 16-8.
Yazoo City High scored 16 runs on six hits with 13 walks to only six strikeouts.
Durr earned the win on the mound in a relief appearance, going four innings while giving up one earned run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Durr also scored two runs after getting on base twice on walks.
Jacques Grady had a huge game in the victory. He went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored.
