Rodney Adams earned his first win as Yazoo City High School’s head coach on Friday night with the 38-0 dismantling of Humphreys County.
Heading into the game, Adams had a steady sense of confidence in his team’s ability.
He knew that they made mistakes last week that could be fixed.
Luckily for him, his players realized it, too.
The realization led to the first of what Adams hopes is a series of victories.
“I was actually pretty confident going into the game,” Adams said. “We were fired up. We still had a chip on our shoulders from last week. We played a lot better last week in the second half after we made some adjustments. We watched film this week and made even more adjustments. It was good to get the first win under my belt as the new coach. I was pretty excited about it.”
The game against Humphreys began with a couple of punts.
Each team was amped up to a high level, yet they could get nothing going.
Yazoo City High School running back Jayden Stewart changed that with a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Indians a 6-0 lead, a lead that they would not lose.
By the time halftime came, the Indians held a commanding 30-0 lead.
The Indians tacked on another touchdown and 2-point conversion to put the final touches on a 38-0 win.
As good as the Indians played on offense, Adams was especially proud of the way his defense stepped up and dominated this week against a pretty good running back.
“We had a shutout this week,” Adams said. “Our defensive guys were really amped up. We had a lot of 3-and-outs. They had a pretty good running back, but we did a good job of stopping him.”
Stewart ended the game with over 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 99-yard breakaway touchdown run.
The Indians will attempt to keep their newfound momentum going when they come up against rival Yazoo County High on Friday night.
Yazoo County dropped to 1-1 on the season after falling 49-6 to Germantown on this Friday night.
While the Indians have not had a ton of success against their rival in recent years, Adams believes this year will be different.
“We have a big rival game coming up this week,” Adams said. “They’ve been dominating this series for the last three years. We have a different perspective on how the game will go this year. I think we will come out fully prepared to do battle with them this year.”
Kickoff at Yazoo County is set for 7 p.m.
