Yazoo City will be creating a Coed Intramural Basketball League for children ages 14-18.
But according to Yazoo City High girls basketball coach Barbara Henderson, they’re going to need help from able and willing adults in the city to make the vision come to fruition.
“This is the first time we have done this in this age group,” Henderson said. “I’ve been trying to do it for years. Last year three people in the community pulled together and got a league approved for kids in the 8-13 age group. We already have four coaches signed up, but we’ll need more. If we have 10 teams, we’ll need at least 10 coaches, if not 20.”
Not only do the adults need to be willing and able, but it would be preferential that they know and understand the game of basketball.
“We need coaches that are knowledgeable about the game,” Henderson said. “We want to teach kids the right way to play. Also, we want our coaches to be able to referee a game if we need them to. I want it to be a community event.”
There are a number of reasons that Henderson wants to get the league together for the older kids, but the main reason is to keep the kids out of harm’s way.
“We have to do something to keep the older kids out of trouble,” Henderson said. “Every time I look in the news, I see stories about murders, drug arrests, wrecks, things like that. This will be a good way for them to occupy their time and keep them out of trouble.”
