Yazoo County’s tough early season stretch continued on Friday night when they fell 34-0 to Velma Jackson on Friday night, their third straight loss.
The defeat dropped their record to 1-3 on the season.
Former Yazoo County football head coach Bernard Euell’s Velma Jackson Falcons took the momentum and never let up.
The Panthers were unable to put up any points while giving up 34, making the final 34-0.
Yazoo County head coach Robert Dobbs was disappointed to see his team struggle greatly with the basics.
“The biggest issue to me in that game is we missed basic fundamental things,” Dobbs said. “We had a bunch of missed tackles. We didn’t do all the necessary things that good teams do to win games.”
According to Dobbs, the majority of the issues stemmed from their own mistakes.
“We have to overcome penalties,” Dobbs said. “We had nice drives. We would get penalties then start going backwards. We have to overcome mental and physical mistakes.”
The Panthers have struggled mightily this season, particularly on offense, but Dobbs feels this is the time to correct the aforementioned errors before they hit district play.
“Definitely, we have had some growing pains early on,” Dobbs said. “I expect things to get better in district. We’re trying to gain some valuable experience right now in our non-district schedule.”
Kobe Fisher went 7-for-14 through the air with 68 yards and an interception.
Kory Gainwell took seven carries 15 yards and had a fumble in the loss. He also caught one pass for 12 yards and racked up three total tackles and had a pass deflection.
Jamarion Stewart took 12 carries 28 yards and caught two passes for 29 yards in the losing effort.
William Noel had three carries for 18 yards and five total tackles.
Malik Banks had three catches for 16 yards, while Ben Luckett had one catch for 11 yards. Luckett also led the Panthers with nine total tackles.
DQ Anderson racked up four total tackles and had two pass deflections.
Cameron Shaffer had six total tackles, one of which was for loss, and one sack against the Falcons.
Kenderian Dixon was able to produce seven total tackles in the loss.
Dyevionte Brown had eight total tackles, one of which was for loss.
Tredarius Carr had six total tackles, one of which was for loss, a sack, and a quarterback hurry.
Laraveon Edwards and Alzavian Shelton each had three total tackles in the defeat.
The Panthers will attempt to break their losing streak on Friday night when they travel to face Raymond High School.
Raymond is 0-4 on the season after dropping a 28-3 game to Morton on Friday night.
Despite their lack of wins, Dobbs believes they can be a problem for his squad if the Indians can’t correct their mental errors.
“They’re a tough-nosed team,” Dobbs said. “They will play hard. They have some athletes. Hopefully, we can put it together.”
Kickoff at Raymond is set for 7 p.m.
