Yazoo County’s basketball teams dropped a pair of games to Velma Jackson on Friday night.
Lady Panthers 23,
Lady Falcons 46
A fourth quarter collapse by the Lady Panthers gave Velma Jackson a 46-23 win on Friday night.
In the first quarter of play, Velma Jackson barely outscored Yazoo County by a score of nine to eight.
Velma Jackson once again scored nine points in the second quarter, while Yazoo County was only able to muster six points, bringing the halftime score to 19-14.
In the third quarter, Yazoo County slowed the pace of the game and both teams struggled to score. Each team put up five points in the third quarter to push the score to 24-19 heading into the final quarter.
Things spiraled quickly in the fourth quarter. The Lady Panthers could not score, and they could not stop Velma Jackson from scoring. The Lady Falcons outscored Yazoo County 22-4 to take the victory by a score of 46-23.
Yazoo County girls basketball coach Patrick Nutter thought his team’s defense was fine for the most part, but their offense needs work.
“We played pretty good defense for most of the game,” Nutter said. “We just turned the ball over in the fourth quarter. They pulled the ball out in the fourth quarter. We tried to pressure them, but we either gave up layups or fouled them. They pressured us, and we either turned the ball over or missed a layup. We didn’t handle it well.”
In hindsight, Nutter believes they may should have take a moment to calm down.
“We should’ve stepped back and waited a few minutes to calm down, but we tried to win the thing,” Nutter said. “All we did was dig in deeper.”
Deja Moore led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 13 points.
Ciara Thompson was second on the team with four points in the loss.
Panthers 36,
Falcons 62
A slow start put the Panthers in a hole they could not get out of in their 62-36 loss to Velma Jackson.
The first quarter of the contest was as disastrous as Yazoo County could have imagined.
The Falcons clicked both offensively and defensively in early, and it led to them taking a 17-0 lead into the second quarter.
Yazoo County finally got on the board in the second quarter with 10 points, but they gave up 18 points in the process, giving Velma Jackson a 35-10 lead at the half.
The Panthers came out of the break much stronger, outscoring Velma Jackson 16-13 in the third to take a 48-26 deficit in the fourth.
The Falcons finished off the Panthers in the fourth quarter with a 14-10 performance, making the final 62-36.
Velma Jackson junior Nick Weatherspoon had a game-high 30 points in the win for the Falcons.
Yazoo County will return to action on Friday when they host Ruleville Central.
