In 2015 the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks started the Mississippi Scholastic Shooting Program.
This program promotes the youth of today to be the hunters of tomorrow by competing in three areas of shotgun events.
Young men and women compete in Sporting Clay, Skeet, and Trap events.
The sport and program are continuing to grow. In 2016 there were seven schools with approximately 100 students participating in the program and now there are ten schools with over 155 students competing.
In May of 2016, Mississippi Scholastic Shooting Sports and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks took eight three-man squads to Edgefield, South Carolina for the Southeastern Conference Regional Tournament. Six young men (two squads) from Tri-County Academy qualified for the tournament and competed.
On October 27, 2017, Tri-County competed in the State Qualifier at Turcotte Shooting Range and six young men (two squads) and one alternate squad have once again qualified to be two of the ten squads from Mississippi for the 2018 Southeastern Conference Regional Tournament to be held in Savannah, Georgia in May.
Those qualifiers are Hughes Skinner, John Williamson, Donovan Carr, Colt Lee, Aidan Barker, and Hunter Roby. The first alternate qualifiers are Mayson Reeves, Elliott Ingram, and Karlten Holcomb. Should any of the top ten qualifying squads be unable to attend, the first alternate team will compete.
