Yazoo County is primed and ready for the start of the regular season after trouncing Canton Academy 20-8 in their Jamboree on Friday night.
For new head coach Robert Dobbs, it was a nice opening contest to work out some kinks.
“Overall, I was impressed with the effort we displayed,” Dobbs said. “We made some minor mistakes, but that’s typical in a Jamboree. I’m pleased with where we are.”
While the win looks impressive on paper, it is made more impressive by the fact that the Panthers weren’t playing with their full deck.
“We didn’t play our full starting lineup in the game,” Dobbs said. “We held out four to five guys for mainly precautionary reasons.”
The lone touchdown by Canton came on a pass, but the busted play did not seem to concern Dobbs all that much.
“They scored on a pass, a long pass,” Dobbs said. “It was a vertical route. Our defensive back misjudged the ball in the air. It was nothing to really worry about or anything like that.”
The end of the Jamboree marked the official beginning of the regular season for Yazoo County, and they will begin the season with a bang on Thursday night.
For the second time in as many years, the Battle for the Y-Trophy will open the football season in Yazoo County.
While the Panthers have won three of the last four games, including two straight, this will be Dobbs’ first Battle of Yazoo as the head coach, though he will be returning a lot of key players that helped Yazoo County take the game 32-6 a year ago.
Dobbs was, however, an assistant on the team the last few years, so the rivalry game is nothing new to him.
He knows what is at stake, and he knows his team will be ready.
“It’s a rivalry game, so no one will need any help getting pumped up,” Dobbs said. “I won’t have to pump our guys up for it. They know most of the guys on the other team, and a lot of them are related to each other. Both teams will be hyped up. It should be a good game.”
The Battle of Yazoo will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.
