The Panthers of Yazoo County have started off 1-1 on the baseball season with a loss to Raymond and a win over Riverside.
Against Raymond, an early scoring drought gave way to a heavy scoring barrage from the Rangers, partly due to five errors on the part of Yazoo County.
After two scoreless innings, Raymond broke the tie with a run in the top of the third inning, but the Panthers came back and tied things up with a run in the bottom of the third, making it a 1-1 game.
The Rangers were able to come out and put up two runs in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
Raymond put the final nail in the coffin with three runs in the top of the seventh to win the game 9-1.
Terrance Milsap had a nice game at the plate for Yazoo with a 2-for-4 effort. He scored the lone run for the Panthers.
Senior Talyn Shaffer, a MDCC signee, earned the loss despite giving up no earned runs (6 unearned runs) with six walks and seven strikeouts.
It was a far different tale for Yazoo’s offense against Riverside on Saturday, but one would not have thought that from the first two innings.
Riverside struck first in the top of the first with one run, while the Panthers were shut out, making it a 1-0 game.
The second inning was a scoreless one.
In the third inning, the Bulldogs ran the score up to 6-0 with five runs.
But in the bottom of the inning, the Panthers finally woke up. They rattled off five runs of their own to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Yazoo County’s bats stayed hot in the bottom of the fourth inning, where they produced eight runs to take a 13-6 lead.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Yazoo County finally put Riverside out of their misery with three runs to make it a 16-6 game.
Trevor Leal earned the win for Yazoo County on the mound after throwing four innings in relief. He gave up one earned run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Leal also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
Dylan Rogers had a big game, going 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Cody Parker went 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.
Yazoo County will host rival Yazoo City High today.
The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
