The Yazoo County Panthers are now an undefeated 22-0 after Friday's conference win at home over J.Z. George with a dominating score of 89-46.
The Panthers are now 7-0 in district and have secured the #1 spot in 3A basketball, and have reached the #7 rank overall in the state.
The Panthers hit the ground running in Friday's home game against J.Z. George. Coach Rahim Lockhart said that his boys did a great job of adjusting and attacking the basket and putting pressure on the other team in transition.
The game went by very quickly, with Yazoo County ahead 32-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers continued their aggressive offense and were ahead 19-56 at the half. The Yazoo County boys seems to slack up a little in the third quarter, allowing J.Z. George to add a few more points on the board, changing the score to 34-69 at the end of the third quarter. The Panthers got a second win in the fourth quarter, scoring another 20 points against the visitors 12, making the final score 46-89.
Credited for the win are Martarious Burwell with 14 points scored, two assists, and two rebounds; Lakevion Dixon with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three steals; Emon Washinton with 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds; and Hunter Barron with 11 points scored, four assists, and seven rebounds.
Going forward, Coach Lockhart said he plans to have the boys in the gym working on offense and perfecting their jump shots.
"We have three more games to play on the road," he said. "Then we will be heading to play in the district tournament."
