The Manchester tennis team traveled to Vicksburg on Wednesday and suffered its first loss of the season 6-3 to St. Aloysius. The Mavs are 4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
“We had never seen St. Al play before. They are a young team, but they are well prepared,” commented Mav Coach Debbie Crisler. “We will get another shot at them at the conference tournament. We can do better, but it will take our best effort.”
While most of the Mavericks had a disappointing outing in Vicksburg, the Manchester boys doubles teams dominated their St. Al opponents. Cole Carpenter and Kinkead Dent easily won 6-0, 6-2 at #1 boys doubles and brothers Nathan Carroll and Matt Carroll scored a relatively easy victory 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Harper Guthrie preserved his undefeated record at #1 boys singles with an inspired 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 three-set victory over Jackson Oaks of St. Al. This is Guthrie’s second come-from-behind victory of the week and puts him in a strong position for the conference tournament in a few weeks.
In other singles action, Upton Hitt fell 6-1, 6-4 at #2 boys singles, Monica Morrison lost 6-1, 6-2 at #1 girls singles and Josie Coker lost her first match of the year 7-5, 6-2.
The Mavs girls doubles teams struggled to find a rhythm. Margaret Dent and Elizabeth Turner lost 6-3, 6-2 at #1 girls doubles and Nettie Taylor Barbour and Mary Sibley McGraw’s comeback came up short 6-1, 6-4 at #2 girls doubles.
The Maverick mixed doubles duo of Marie Lewis and Reid Bain lost 6-3, 6-2.
Next week, the Mavs play Victors at 3:30 pm on Tuesday in Yazoo City and travel on Friday to face Sharkey Issaquena Academy.
