The Benton Academy girls softball team finished their season last weekend after playing three games in the South State Tournament.
The Lady Raiders lost their first game to Union Christian Academy 12-2, but were able to stay in the running after defeating Providence Classical Academy 17-2.
The Benton girls ended their time at the tournament after falling a second time later in the day in a rematch against Union Christian with a score of 17-9.
"We struggled to hit off of UCA's pitcher in the first game, which limited us to only two runs, and we had several errors in the field allowing them runs," said Coach Natalie Whitehead. "We started hitting the ball better in the second and third games and played small ball well. We had two bad innings defensively against UCA that we just couldn't recover from."
Whitehead said that the Lady Raiders finished their season with a record of 11-8, and had a district record of 3-5.
"They had to overcome a lot of adversities this season and I am so proud of the way the season turned out," she said. "We finished with a winning season which is always a positive, but we will definitely miss our two seniors next year. They have been a huge part of this team for several years now and their leadership will be truly missed."
One of the highlights of the season for Benton Academy is senior Brittany Bigfrod being named to the 2019 All-Star Fastpitch Softball Team.
Bigford has enjoyed an outstanding career as a member of the Lady Raiders.
