Benton Academy’s Lady Raiders took a tough 56-21 loss to Canton Academy on Friday night, their second loss to Canton this season.
Things started off disastrously for the Lady Raiders against Canton. They put up 0 points in the first quarter, while giving up 19 to take a 19-0 deficit into the second.
In the second quarter, Benton actually scored seven points, but they gave up 12 to make it a 31-7 game at the half.
The break did not help Benton’s offense too much. In the third quarter, Canton outscored Benton 10-5 to take a commanding 41-12 lead into the final quarter of action.
The Lady Raiders were able to put up nine points, but it was far too little too late. Canton took the game 56-21.
Benton Academy girls basketball coach Hall Redfearn was at a bit of a loss after the game.
“To be honest, I really don’t know what happened,” Redfearn said. “I don’t know if we didn’t show up to play or what. Brittany got two fouls in the first quarter, so we had to bring her out. She got another foul early in the second, so she didn’t play much at all. We just didn’t play well.”
Redfearn did think Canton shot the ball exceptionally well, but he doesn’t believe that tells the whole story.
“Canton shot really well,” Redfearn said. “They don’t normally do that. They aren’t a great shooting team. But that doesn’t really explain how we played.”
Brittany McCausley was the leading scorer for Benton with 12 points in the loss.
Madelyn Manor scored seven points in the losing effort.
Benton Academy will return to the court on Thursday when they host Copiah Academy.
Tip-off for the first game of the night is set for 4 p.m.
