Yazoo County’s Lady Panthers took a commanding 3-0 lead in the conference with a 7-2 win over Charleston on Thursday.
According to Yazoo County softball coach Grant Andrews, the game went as well as it could have possibly gone.
“We played pretty close to a perfect game on offense and defense,” Andrews said. “We pitched well, got hits with runners in scoring position and also played an errorless game. This is what you have got to do if you want to be district champs. This put us in first place with a 3-0 record.”
The game started out as a scoreless, defensive battle.
After two innings of virtually no offense, the Lady Panthers broke through in the bottom of the third inning with two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Charleston finally got some offense going in the top of the fourth inning. They tied things up with two big runs to make it a 2-2 game.
But the Lady Panthers responded.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Yazoo County once again regained a lead with three runs to give them a 5-2 lead.
The sixth inning was another victory for Yazoo County, as they put up two more runs to extend the lead further to 7-2.
Charleston threatened in the seventh inning by getting two girls on base, but they were held there, allowing Yazoo County to take the necessary game 7-2.
The Lady Panthers have a huge rematch with Charleston on Tuesday night to decide the conference champion.
