Yazoo County’s Lady Panthers swept first round opponent Tylertown to move on to the second round of the MHSAA softball playoffs.
Yazoo County head softball coach Grant Andrews is proud of how much time and effort his girls have put into preparing for their lengthy playoff run.
“I’m proud of how the team has stayed focused and put themselves in the second round,” Andrews said. “They have worked hard this year and have earned it.”
Their run began on Friday night when they traveled to Tylertown.
In the first inning, Yazoo County put up eight runs to take an 8-0 lead.
They outscored Tylertown 8-3 from that point on.
The Lady Panthers won the contest 17-4.
The bats for Yazoo County were alive and well as they outhit the Lady Chiefs 16-3 in the dominating performance.
Alex Carter, Destiny Epps, Marlana Tayor, Mya Epps, Carla Sims, and Hope Warrington all had multiple hits in the victory.
Erica Carson had five strikeouts in the winning effort on the mound.
Game number two was moved to Monday night, and Tylertown seemed energized by the move.
The Lady Chiefs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Lady Panthers came back in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Yazoo County doubled up their score with four more runs, making it an 8-2 game.
Tylertown refused to go away, however, and cut the lead to at 8-4 in the third inning.
But the Lady Panthers came right back and tacked on another run to make it a 9-4 game.
The Lady Chiefs would score two more runs, but the Lady Panthers would top them with four more of their own.
The Lady Panthers were named victorious by a score of 13-6.
For the second time in as many games, Erica Carson earned the win on the mound. She, along with Tailyn Esco, also had multiple hits in the game.
Yazoo County will face Magee in the second round of the playoffs.
The first game was played on Tuesday night, but it was not upon completion by press time.
The second game of the series will be on Thursday in Magee.
The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
