After an impressive showing in the district and regional track meets, the Yazoo County Lady Panther track team recently competed in the Class 3A state track tournament in Pearl.
And while Yazoo County -winners of the division and regional championships- were unable to bring home any state titles, head coach Christine Demus was very pleased with the season her Lady Panthers had on the track
“It was such a blessing to see these athletes meet such high expectations. We faced every track meet with individual goals and team goals. Needless to say, those goals were met. My leaders echoed my expectations which later led to our success,” said YCHS track coach Christine Demus.
First place finishers in the regional tournament were: the 4x100 team of Sanjunita Irvin, Karime Coronado, Alycia McCree and Angel Williams, the 4x400 team of Sanjunita Irvin, Karime Coronado, Eliza Coronado and Angel Williams, and Sherika Thurman in the 300 meter hurdles.
Second place finishers were: Karime Corondao in the triple jump, Elizabeth Solano in the 3200 meter run and the 1600 meter run, the team of Ariana Burdon, Eliza Coronado, Kyana Greer and Solano in the 4x800.
Third place finishers were: the 4x200 team of Irvin, Williams, Karime Coronado and Sherika Thurman, Greer in the 800 meter run, Irvin in the 200 meter dash, Casey Walker in the 400 meter dash, Thurman in the 100 meter hurdles, Shanitra Falls in the high jump, Cambreia Lampkin in the discus and McCree in the shot put.
McCree also finished fourth in the discus, Lampkin finished fourth in the shot put and Eliza Coronado finished fourth in the 1600 meter run.
Demus will be stepping away from her track coaching duties next season to spend more time with family but says she will still be involved with the program.
“It’s a tough decision to let it go, but my kids are getting older and participating in several activities so I need to be ‘Mom’ for a while. This year was great though. For the first time in years I actually enjoyed being in the sun for long periods of time,” says Demus with a smile. “I want to give a special thanks to Coach Rick McCall and Sgt. Major Moore for assisting me this year.
