The Manchester Academy Lady Mavericks were ready for a fight Thursday night in their rematch with the Carroll Academy Lady Rebels.
After winning the previous game by one point in overtime last week against Carroll, the Lady Mavs were more prepared.
MA started off the game with a burst of energy. Despite several turnovers back and forth between both teams, the Lady Mavericks were able to get a strong lead of 21-11 in the first quarter thanks to starters Ivy Sowell, Anna Kate Griffin, Lanie Potter, Hannah Clark Havens, and Gracie Jones.
"The girls came out of the gate playing hard," said Coach Emily Poe. "We got a little complacent in the second quarter."
The Lady Mavericks seemed to lose energy in the second quarter, with few points added to the board, but kept their defense steady, holding the Lady Rebels to 25-18, thanks to efforts from Madison Meeks, Mikayla Williams, Anna Kate Griffin, Lanie Potter and Ivy Sowell.
After a half-time meeting with Coach Poe, the Manchester girls went into the 3rd quarter with a renewed spirit, gaining a nearly twenty point lead against Carroll Academy with a score of 43-24.
The Lady Mavericks continued to battle the Lady Rebels all the way to the end of the fourth quarter, with many turnovers and accurate shots on both sides adding more and more points to the board.
"After halftime we came out fired up," she said. "We never let up and I was very proud of the girls for fighting hard."
MA defeated Lady Rebels with a final score of 57-42, updating their record to 8 wins and 3 losses for the season.
Overall Potter scored 21 points, Jones scored 18, Sowell scored 7, Lizzy Carpenter scored 6, Griffin scored 3 and Meeks scored 2.
